Student safety and health is paramount

Gun Violence — Covid —Wildfire smoke — Unknown Future Challenges. All show us that we must think ahead to ensure that our students have safe and welcoming schools that are prepared to meet the challenges of today and tomorrow.

I pledge to support:

  • Proactive investments in physical measures for student safety

  • Policy to prioritize safety and health

  • Investment in teacher and staff training

Maintain our high academic standards and close achievement gaps

RUSD has a proven track record of high student achievement but we have an achievement gap. As a Hispanic woman, this gap is personal for me. RUSD can close the achievement gap without sacrificing our high academic standards.

I pledge to support:

  • Policy to enable the use of existing data to proactively identify students that are at risk of falling behind and to identify where expected student growth targets are not being met

  • Funding for interventions and teacher training so that all students have the tools they need for success

Be a careful financial steward for today and tomorrow

The Foundation for Reed Schools historically has provided a substantial portion of RUSD’s budget. As the past-chair of family giving for the Foundation, I understand the fragility of that funding and the importance of strategic planning. As a board member for the YMCA, we successfully restructured our budget to expand services to youth and families during Covid shutdowns despite losing core revenue.

I pledge to focus on core services (student achievement and safety) to keep the budget on target
